Giving Students the Freedom to Learn
Fort Worth Sudbury School is a self-directed Sudbury school serving ages 5-18.

Instead of curriculum, mandatory classes, and assignments, students learn through optional class offerings, play, individual mentoring, and by authentically helping to run the school. Each student is given the individual freedom to pursue their own passions, and develop their own educational path.  At Fort Worth Sudbury School students come to truly know themselves, charting their own educational pathways preparing them for an adulthood in which they will become independent, and self directed problem solvers.

{Belonging & Community} Fort Worth Sudbury School defiantly doesn't "look" like a traditional school, but that's the point! Our students feel a sense of belonging and community. A home away from home where they are able to be themselves, make mistakes, and learn & grow with each other. Our Mentors and Students work together to provide an environment that allows students to feel safe and loved, creating life-long lovers of learning.A lot of fun is mixed in with the serious learning that's happening, and we wouldn't want it any other way.

{Raising Good Humans} Students are integrally involved with the interworking of their school - from problem solving issues that need to be addressed, overseeing chores, and even helping with filing IRS paperwork for FWSS Staff. Our Student-led philosophy gives everyone in our community the opportunity to develop personal responsibility & integrity, become involved in community service, and develop a commitment to social justice.

{Implementing Life Skills} The kitchen is a favorite spot as students make their lunches or test out new recipes. The industrial kitchen gives them ample opportunities to learn self sufficiency, kitchen safety, and culinary skills.

{Learning Through Movement} Our outdoor area is available for students to come out and enjoy whenever they'd like - no short scheduled recesses here! If a little more adventure is requested, Mentors are available to walk with students to the city park right next door.

{Encouraging Creativity} The Art Room is always open and stocked with supplies to facilitate student-led creativity and projects. Friendships are created along with the artwork, as students of all ages gather together at our group tables.

{Discover New Passions} Although there are no required classes at our Sudbury School, mentors hold offerings to facilitate student interests. Often a student will share a new idea or interest, and others will join in on researching and participating. Recently examples include dissections, astronomy, Dungeon & Dragons, bird watching, sewing, and baking.

{Practicing for the Future} Many of our students are already showing entrepreneurial spirits, and even executing their ideas. "Get Glammed Beauty Salon" is available for student nail appointments, and does an amazing job!

{Exploring the World} On a recent field trip we hiked & explored along the trails of the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge. Students spotted tarantula nests & webs, armadillo burrows, and discovered some fascinating ruffled lichen.  They worked together to identify plants and insects, learned from a Park Ranger & saw the school mascot - an opossum!
